The Look of Stone, Poured in One Piece
Stamped concrete starts as an ordinary pour. While the surface is still workable, it gets color and is pressed with patterned mats, so the cured slab reads as slate, flagstone, brick, cobblestone or wood plank. Around Mesquite it shows up most on back patios, front walks, driveway borders and pool decks. It costs more than a broom finish, usually less than natural stone, and it is a single slab rather than hundreds of loose pieces.
Why the base matters even more
A stamped slab is decorative, so a crack shows. The Blackland clay under Dallas County swells with water and shrinks in dry spells, according to the Dallas County Master Gardeners, and that movement is what cracks slabs. Stamped concrete gets the same compacted base and rebar as any other slab we pour. We also hide control joints in the pattern, along grout lines or plank seams, so the slab still has planned places to crack without breaking up the look.
How stamping works
- Color. Pigment goes into the mix, gets broadcast across the surface as a color hardener, or both.
- Release. A powder or liquid release is spread before the mats go down. It stops them from sticking and leaves darker tones in the recesses for an aged look.
- Pressing. Mats are set down in order and tamped while the concrete is at the right stage of set. That window is short in summer heat, so we pour early and keep enough hands on site to finish the pattern in time.
- Hand detail. Edges and corners a mat cannot reach are textured by hand.
- Wash and seal. Once cured, leftover release is rinsed off and a sealer goes on to lock in the color and add sheen.
Choosing color for Texas sun
Average highs near 97 degrees in July and August at Dallas Love Field mean a dark stamped patio can get uncomfortably hot under bare feet. Lighter tans, grays and sandstone tones stay cooler and fade less noticeably over time. A contrasting border or a darker release adds depth without making the whole slab dark.
Popular patterns
- Ashlar slate and random stone for patios
- Cobblestone or brick borders on driveways and walks
- Wood plank for a deck look without boards to replace
- Seamless textures that add grip without grout lines, good around pools
Resealing and care
Sealer is what keeps a stamped surface looking fresh. Plan to reseal every few years, sooner on a sunny pool deck. Clean it with a mild cleaner and a soft brush; Fixr warns that hitting stains with a power washer can fade the color. A grip additive in the sealer is worth asking about for walks and pool areas. Fixr gives stamped concrete about the same life as standard concrete, roughly 25 years.

How It Works
1. Choose a pattern
Samples come to your house so you can judge color in your own yard's light.
2. Prepare the base
Old concrete is removed, the base is compacted, forms and steel are set.
3. Pour and press
Concrete is placed, colored and stamped at the right stage of set, with joints tucked into the pattern.
4. Wash and seal
After curing, release is washed off and the surface is sealed.

Stamped Concrete Questions
How much does stamped concrete cost?
Fixr lists most stamped concrete patios at $12 to $18 per square foot, with basic patterns from $8 and complex multi-color work up to $30. A 200 square foot patio runs about $2,400 to $3,600 nationally.
Is stamped concrete cheaper than pavers?
Basic stamped concrete is often similar to or slightly cheaper than pavers; Fixr puts pavers from just under $11 per square foot. Mid and high-end stamped work can cost more. Stamped is one slab, so there are no joints for weeds or ants, but a crack cannot be fixed by swapping one paver.
Does stamped concrete get slick?
A glossy sealer can be slippery when wet. On walks and pool decks we use textured patterns and can mix a grip additive into the sealer.
How often does it need sealing?
Plan on resealing every few years, more often in full sun or around a pool. Faded, dull color is the sign it is time.
Can my current slab be stamped?
Not the slab itself; the pattern has to be pressed into fresh concrete. A sound slab can sometimes take a stamped overlay, while a cracked or sunken one is better torn out and repoured.
