Concrete in a Lake Town
Rowlett wraps around the shore of Lake Ray Hubbard, and that lake explains most of the city we see as concrete contractors. Wikipedia notes that the town has had a building boom since the lake was completed in 1971. The population was 2,243 in 1970, 23,260 in 1990 and 62,535 in 2020. So most Rowlett homes, and most of their driveways and patios, date from the 1970s onward.
From railroad stop to suburb
Rowlett was founded in the 1840s and its first post office opened in 1880 under the name Morris. The Dallas and Greenville Railway arrived in 1886. Interstate 30 bypassed the town in the 1960s and it declined for a while, until the lake brought new building. It incorporated in 1952 with about 250 people. The city is named for Rowlett Creek, a tributary of the East Fork of the Trinity River.
Outdoor living is the big ask
With the lake close by and warm weather most of the year, outdoor space gets used hard here. Typical projects include:
- Pool decks that are cracked, lifted at the coping, or too hot and slick underfoot
- Larger patios to hold an outdoor kitchen, seating and shade
- Stamped concrete walkways and patios with a stone or slate look
- Driveway replacement on 1970s and 1980s homes where panels have dropped
- Slab repair for walkways and steps that have pulled away from the house
Working near the water
Lots that slope toward the lake or a creek move water across the yard every time it rains. If a patio or deck is not graded right, water runs under it and softens the clay, and the slab starts to settle. We look at where water comes from and where it goes before we set forms. Sometimes that means adding a drain, changing the slope or extending the slab edge deeper.
The soil here is Blackland Prairie clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. Near the shoreline the ground can stay wetter longer, while upslope it dries out hard in August. A slab that spans both conditions needs good reinforcement and joints placed to control where it cracks.
After the 2015 tornado
On December 26, 2015, an EF4 tornado tracked 13 miles through southeast Rowlett. It damaged or destroyed hundreds of homes and vehicles, several businesses and a city water tower. Many homes were rebuilt, and the rebuilding put heavy equipment on driveways and sidewalks. Some of that flatwork was patched instead of replaced. If your driveway still has a cracked or uneven section from that period, a proper repair now can stop it from getting worse.
Pool deck details that matter here
A pool deck takes direct sun, splash water and pool chemicals every day of the swim season. We pour decks with:
- A broom or textured finish that grips when wet
- Expansion joints at the coping so the deck and pool shell can move separately
- A slope that carries water away from the pool and away from the house
- An optional stamped pattern or a sealed finish that is easier to clean
Rebuilt streets after 2015
Rebuilding after a storm like the 2015 tornado can leave a patchwork: new driveways poured next to slabs that were only partly repaired. When we tie into or replace concrete on those streets, we check where an old panel ends and a patch begins, because patches poured without a proper joint often crack along the seam. We also check the City of Rowlett's requirements and any HOA rules for your street before we schedule.

Rowlett Questions
Can you replace the deck around my existing pool in Rowlett?
Yes. We remove the old deck carefully around the coping, rebuild the base, and pour a new deck with expansion joints and a non-slip finish.
My lakeside patio keeps sinking. What causes that?
Usually water running under the slab and softening the clay. We look at grading and drainage first, since a new slab on the same wet ground will settle the same way.
Can stamped concrete go around a pool?
It can. We use a texture that is not slick when wet and a sealer suited to pool areas, and we explain how often it should be resealed.
