An Older Town East of the Metro
Terrell sits about 32 miles east of Dallas in northern Kaufman County, and it is one of the older towns we cover as concrete contractors. Development began in 1873 when the Texas and Pacific Railroad came through. The town was named for Robert A. Terrell, whose farm lay on its western edge. U.S. Route 80 runs through the city center, Interstate 20 runs along the south side and State Highway 34 along the east.
What an older town means for concrete
A town with a long history has a wide range of concrete. Near the center you find older homes with narrow drives, original walks, porch steps and slabs that have been patched more than once. On the edges, newer homes have younger concrete. Terrell had 17,465 people in the 2020 census and a 2023 estimate of 21,480, so new building is adding to that mix.
Older flatwork usually fails from underneath. The clay of the Blackland Prairie swells in wet seasons and shrinks in dry ones, and over decades that opens voids under slabs. Panels drop, cracks offset and water finds its way in. Our first step on any repair is finding out whether the base is the problem.
Work we do in Terrell
- Driveways: full replacement on a compacted base with rebar, or replacement of individual failed panels
- Walks and steps: rebuilding sunken front walks and broken porch steps
- Patios: new slabs and replacements for small, cracked back patios
- Stamped concrete: decorative patios and walks
- Pool decks: slip-resistant decks with expansion joints at the coping
- Slabs: pads for shops, sheds and carports on larger lots
History you can still see
Terrell State Hospital, a 316-bed psychiatric hospital, is one of the city's long-standing institutions. The No. 1 British Flying Training School Museum at Terrell Municipal Airport marks the World War II school that trained Royal Air Force pilots, the first of six such civilian schools in the United States. The Round House, an octagonal house preserved on the Southwestern Christian College campus, is described as one of 20 such structures in the country. Homes near these older parts of town often have concrete that has been in place for generations.
Matching the house
On older homes, a new driveway or walk should fit the house. We keep finishes simple where that suits the style, match the width of the original walk when it makes sense, and rebuild steps to safe, even rises. On newer homes, owners often prefer stamped or colored concrete for patios and entries.
Weather on the prairie
Terrell has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild to cool winters. Open ground dries fast in summer, and spring storms soak it again. We schedule pours around the forecast, start early in hot weather and cure the concrete properly.
Trucks and trailers
If you keep a work truck, a trailer or both, the driveway has to be built for it. A driveway built only for cars will crack under that weight, usually at the edges and at the street. When you tell us what parks on the slab, we set the thickness, steel and edge details to match, and we plan the drive approach so heavy tires do not break the corners.
The approach at the street
On older Terrell streets the drive approach, the strip between the street and the walk, is often the first piece to break. It takes every turning tire and sits where street runoff collects. When we replace one, we cut back to sound concrete, pour full depth with rebar, and form a smooth transition so trailers do not bottom out. We check whether the City of Terrell requires a permit for that work before we schedule.

Terrell Questions
Can you rebuild the front steps on an older Terrell home?
Yes. We remove the broken steps, form new ones with even rises and a solid footing, and tie them to the walk so they stay level.
My driveway has been patched several times. Should I keep patching?
Repeated patching usually means the base underneath has failed. Replacing the affected panels with a proper base is often cheaper over time than patching again.
Do you work on rural lots outside the city limits?
We do. On larger lots we plan truck access and drainage carefully, and we check county or city rules depending on where the property sits.
