A City Built in Two Decades

Murphy is a small city in area, about 5.7 square miles in southern Collin County, but it filled in fast, and that is what shapes our work there as concrete contractors. The President George Bush Turnpike opened in 1999 and gave Murphy quick access to the west. Wikipedia credits homes built after that opening for the city's rapid expansion. The population went from 3,099 in 2000 to 17,708 in 2010 and 21,013 in 2020, and housing units went from 1,126 to 6,083.

What that means for your concrete

In a city where nearly every house is from the same twenty-year window, the concrete projects look alike in one way: the original slabs are mostly fine, and homeowners want more. Larger patios, a stamped walkway, a wider driveway or a full pool deck are the usual requests. Repair work tends to be targeted, such as a panel that dropped near the garage, a crack that keeps opening, or a walk lifted by a growing tree.

Where Murphy sits

Murphy lies midway between Plano and Wylie on FM 544, bordered by Plano to the west, Richardson to the southwest, Sachse to the south, Wylie to the east and Parker to the north. Southfork Ranch is about 2 miles north. Its elevation is 581 feet. First settlers came in 1846 on Peters colony land grants, and the original townsite was called Old Decator.

Our usual Murphy projects

Stamped concrete patios. We press a stone, slate or brick pattern into fresh colored concrete, then seal it. Resealing every few years keeps the color rich.

Pool decks. Pools need a deck that grips when wet, drains away from the water and has expansion joints at the coping. We can match a stamped patio so the whole backyard looks planned.

Driveway widening. Adding a strip beside an existing drive, tied in with dowels so the two sections move together.

Concrete slabs. Pads for sheds, pergolas and outdoor kitchens.

Concrete repair. Targeted panel replacement and crack sealing when most of the slab is still sound.

New driveways. Full replacement when the base has failed under several panels.

Soil that moves

The Blackland Prairie clay under Murphy swells when wet and shrinks when dry, and in long dry spells it cracks deeply. Even young slabs feel that. When we tie new concrete into an old patio or drive, we check that the existing slab is stable first. If it has already moved, we may separate the new pour with an isolation joint so the two pieces do not fight each other.

Parks and trees

Murphy maintains 10 parks totaling 195.5 acres, including the 60-acre Murphy Central Park, and many streets are lined with trees that were planted when the homes went up. Those trees are now big enough for roots to reach under walks and driveways. During the estimate we look for root lift and talk through options, from cutting and replacing a lifted section to rerouting a path.

Curing in the Texas heat

A patio or deck poured on a July afternoon can lose surface water faster than it should, leaving a weak, dusty top that wears early. In Murphy, where so many backyards were poured in the same few years and now get new pools and kitchens beside them, we also watch the joint between old and new. A slab that cures fast pulls away from its neighbor, so we keep the new pour wet and cut its joints on time.

Planning around a 5.7-square-mile city

With 6,083 housing units on about 5.7 square miles, Murphy is compact. Getting concrete to a fenced backyard can mean a line pump or wheelbarrows through a gate rather than a truck at the forms. We check gate widths and fence lines during the estimate and tell you how the concrete will reach the yard. We also check whether the City of Murphy requires a permit and whether your HOA needs to approve the design.

Murphy Questions

Can a stamped patio in Murphy match my new pool deck?

Yes. We can use the same pattern and color on both, or choose a complementary border. Pouring them as one plan also lets us line up joints and drainage.

Will a new driveway section match the old concrete?

New concrete starts lighter and darkens with age. We match the finish and joint pattern so the addition looks intentional.

Can you fix a sidewalk lifted by a tree root?

We cut out the lifted section, deal with the root where it is safe to do so, and pour a new section level with its neighbors.
