Concrete on Rural Ground

McLendon-Chisholm sits along State Highway 205 in south central Rockwall County, about six miles southeast of Rockwall, and it is mostly open, rural land. For concrete contractors that means bigger jobs on bigger lots. The two communities of McLendon and Chisholm incorporated together on October 18, 1969, mainly to gain zoning protection and keep their rural way of life. The 2020 census counted 3,562 residents, and Wikipedia lists a 2023 estimate of 4,954.

Two old settlements

McLendon was settled around 1870 and named for landowner P. A. McLendon. Chisholm traces back to land given to a Mexican War veteran in 1847. Enoch Parson Chisholm and B. Frank Chisholm bought 200 acres in 1856, and the community was platted in 1886. Both post offices closed in 1905, and each place stayed small for decades. Population density in 2020 was just 284.9 people per square mile, far lower than the suburbs around it.

What acreage asks of concrete

Long driveways. A drive that runs from SH 205 or a county road back to the house crosses changing ground and carries delivery trucks, trailers and farm equipment. We look at the whole length, size the thickness and steel for the heaviest vehicle and plan joints and drainage along the run.

Barn and shop slabs. Workshops, barns and equipment buildings need a flat, strong floor. We use a vapor barrier under enclosed space, a rebar grid, and thickened edges where walls bear.

Outdoor living. Large patios, outdoor kitchen pads and stamped walkways that tie the house to the yard.

Pool decks. Textured, slip-resistant decks with expansion joints at the coping.

Repairs. Cracked and settled panels on older drives and walks.

Soil and water on open land

The area lies in the Blackland Prairie, known for dark clay that shrinks and cracks in dry weather and swells after rain. Open fields dry out hard in summer and absorb storm water fast in spring. On rural lots, water also moves across long distances, so a driveway or slab can sit in the path of runoff from well uphill. We check slopes, swales and culverts before we set forms, and we grade so water passes by the concrete, not under it.

Access and logistics

On large lots, getting concrete to the forms is part of the plan. We look at gate widths, soft ground, septic fields and turning room for ready-mix trucks during the estimate. Where a truck cannot reach, we plan another placement method so your yard is not torn up.

Families on bigger lots

Almost 80 percent of McLendon-Chisholm households were married couples in 2020, and the low density leaves room on most lots. Common requests include sport court slabs, play areas and covered patios with room for an outdoor kitchen. We size these as part of one plan so slabs line up and drain together.

Pools in the country

Pools on larger lots often sit farther from the house and catch more blowing dust and leaves. A textured deck that grips when wet, a slope that carries water away from the pool, and expansion joints at the coping all help. A sealed or stamped surface is easier to hose off. We plan the deck, any walkway to the house and the patio as one layout so they drain together.

Zoned to stay rural

The town incorporated in 1969 largely to keep zoning control and a rural way of life, and in 2020 it still had fewer than 300 people per square mile. On rural lots, a septic system, a culvert under the drive or a long gravel approach is something to plan around. Before we pour, we locate any septic tank and field lines so trucks stay clear, and we check whether a culvert under the drive needs to be extended. Rules can differ between the city and the county depending on where your property sits, so we check what applies.

McLendon-Chisholm Questions

How do you handle a very long driveway in McLendon-Chisholm?

We plan it in sections with joints and drainage along the whole run, size it for the heaviest vehicles and schedule enough trucks to place it efficiently.

Can you pour a barn slab with drains?

Yes. We can slope the slab toward floor drains or a door, and coordinate drain locations with your building plan before the pour.

Will concrete trucks damage my property getting to the site?

We plan the route during the estimate and avoid septic fields and soft ground. If needed, we use another way to place the concrete.
