Wide Awake Wylie, Built Fast
Wylie sits between Lavon Lake and Lake Ray Hubbard, on State Route 78 about 24 miles northeast of central Dallas, and it is one of the fastest-built cities we serve as concrete contractors. The census counted 15,132 people in 2000, 41,427 in 2010 and 57,526 in 2020. Most of the homes, and most of the concrete around them, are less than twenty-five years old.
Hail, not just heat
On April 11, 2016, a hailstorm dropped softball-sized hail on Wylie. Wikipedia reports that it damaged an estimated 80 percent of the homes in the city. Hail rarely breaks a properly built slab, but the repairs that followed did put roofing trucks, dumpsters and lifts on driveways all over town. A driveway designed for cars can crack under that kind of load. If yours developed cracks or a sunken corner around that time, it is worth checking whether the base was damaged.
A short town history
Wylie began as Nickelville in the early 1870s. The Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway laid track half a mile north of the original townsite in 1886, and the town incorporated along the railroad in November 1887. It took its name from Lt. Colonel William D. Wylie, a railroad right-of-way agent. The nickname "Wide Awake Wylie" came along in the 1940s and 1950s. Downtown still has many century-old buildings, while the newer neighborhoods spread out toward the lakes.
Clay, lakes and drainage
Wylie is in the Blackland Prairie, and the soil is dark clay that shrinks and swells with moisture. Water is everywhere here: by the Census Bureau figures on Wikipedia, about 40 percent of the city's total area is water. Lots that slope toward creeks and lake coves carry runoff across yards, and that water will find any gap under a slab. Before we pour, we look at:
- Where downspouts discharge and whether they dump water next to the slab
- Which way the yard falls and whether the new concrete will block that flow
- Whether the edges of an old slab have been undercut
- Whether a drain or a change in grade is needed
What we do for Wylie homes
Driveways. Panel replacement, widening, and full replacement with a compacted base and rebar.
Patios. Extensions off builder patios and new slabs for seating and outdoor kitchens.
Stamped concrete. Patterned and colored surfaces for patios, walks and pool surrounds.
Pool decks. Textured, slip-resistant decks with expansion joints at the coping.
Slabs. Pads for sheds, play structures and small workshops.
Repairs. Crack sealing, edge repair and resealing joints so water stays out.
Timing your project
Spring is storm season in North Texas, and summers are long and hot. We schedule pours around the forecast, start early on hot days and cure the concrete properly so the surface stays strong. We also check whether the City of Wylie requires a permit for your work and whether your HOA needs to approve it.
Downtown and the older blocks
Not all of Wylie is new. The historic downtown and the streets around it have older homes with original walks, steps and narrow driveways. Those often need a different kind of work: replacing a broken front step, rebuilding a sunken walk to the porch, or widening a single-car drive. We match the scale of the house and keep the finish simple so it fits the older blocks.
Wide Awake Wylie
The town picked up the nickname "Wide Awake Wylie" in the late 1940s and 1950s, and its downtown kept many century-old buildings through later renovation. Front walks and steps on the blocks around it often date from long before the subdivisions. When we rebuild a walk or step there, we set even risers, slope treads slightly so water runs off, and pour on a compacted base so the new step does not tip away from the porch like the old one did.

Wylie Questions
Can heavy trucks from roof repairs damage my Wylie driveway?
Yes. Dumpsters and loaded trucks can crack panels or push edges down, especially near the street. We can assess which panels need replacing and whether the base was damaged.
Why does water collect next to my patio?
Usually the patio or the yard is graded toward the house, or downspouts empty right beside it. We correct the slope on new work and suggest drainage fixes where needed.
When is a new Wylie driveway ready for cars?
Walking on it after a day or two is normally fine. Cars should wait longer, usually about a week, and we give you exact dates based on the mix and the weather on pour day.
