A City Named for Stone
Rockwall gets its name from something in the ground: buried walls of rock that look like they were built by hand. Wikipedia describes them as a naturally jointed formation, later identified as sandstone dikes that pushed into older Cretaceous marl. As concrete contractors, we find that a fitting start for a city where people care a lot about how their hardscape looks. Rockwall sits on the eastern shore of Lake Ray Hubbard, about 20 miles northeast of Dallas, and it is the seat of Rockwall County.
Growth by the numbers
Settlers arrived in 1851, and the town was established on April 17, 1854. Rockwall County was carved out of Kaufman County in 1873. The modern city has grown fast. The 2010 census counted 37,490 people, the 2020 census 47,251, and the 2024 estimate on Wikipedia is 53,547. There were 17,772 housing units in 2020. With that much recent building, a lot of the concrete here is young enough to upgrade rather than tear out.
What Rockwall homeowners tend to want
Stamped concrete. Patterned and colored patios, walkways and pool surrounds are popular here. Stamping is done while the concrete is still plastic, using mats that press in a stone, slate or brick texture. After curing, we seal it to bring out the color and protect the surface. Plan on resealing every few years.
Pool decks. Lakeside living and hot summers mean plenty of pools. A good deck needs a textured surface for wet feet, expansion joints at the coping and a slope away from the water.
Larger patios. Outdoor kitchens and covered seating areas need a slab sized and reinforced for the load of columns, counters and appliances.
Driveways. Widening, adding a turnaround, or replacing an older driveway that has cracked and settled.
Slabs and repair. Pads for sheds and equipment, plus crack sealing and panel replacement on existing flatwork.
Ground conditions
Rockwall lies within the Blackland Prairie, known for dark, alkaline clay that swells when it is wet and shrinks when dry. Wikipedia lists the city's elevation at 561 feet, and lots near the shore can slope noticeably toward the water. That combination means water moves across yards quickly in a storm and the clay below can stay wet or dry out unevenly.
Our answer is careful site prep: removing soft topsoil, compacting a firm base, placing rebar at mid-depth, and setting grades that carry water away from both the house and the slab. On sloped lots we may thicken edges or add a drain so runoff does not undercut the concrete.
Sealing and upkeep
Decorative concrete keeps its looks only when it is maintained. We explain how to clean stamped surfaces, which sealers hold up in full sun, and how to tell when it is time to reseal. A deck or patio that is resealed on schedule keeps its color and sheds water and stains better.
Repairing what is already there
Not every Rockwall project starts from scratch. Older sections of town and the first waves of lake-era subdivisions have driveways and walks that have cracked or dropped at a joint. Before recommending a tear-out, we check whether the trouble is a single failed panel, a void under the slab, or a base problem across the whole drive. Replacing two panels and sealing the remaining joints can be the sensible fix when the rest of the concrete is sound. When the base has failed in several places, we say so and price a full replacement instead.
Permits and HOAs
If your neighborhood has an HOA, it may set rules on materials, colors and driveway layouts. We provide a written scope and sketch for approval, and we check whether the City of Rockwall requires a permit before we schedule. Rockwall has been the county seat since Rockwall County was carved out of Kaufman County in 1873, so county offices are close by if a rural address outside city limits needs a different check.

Rockwall Questions
How long does stamped concrete last in Rockwall's sun?
The concrete itself lasts decades. The color and sheen depend on the sealer, which typically needs to be reapplied every few years in full sun. We explain the maintenance before you choose a finish.
Can you build a slab for an outdoor kitchen?
Yes. We size and reinforce the slab for the counters, columns and appliances, and plan any utility sleeves before the pour.
Will my HOA need to approve a new patio?
If your neighborhood has an HOA, it often will. We give you a scope and layout to submit and wait for approval before we start.
