Concrete in the County Seat
Kaufman is the seat of Kaufman County and the farthest southeast town we regularly serve as concrete contractors. U.S. Route 175 runs through its southwest side as a four-lane, limited-access highway, 33 miles northwest to Dallas. State Highway 34 passes the south and east sides, running 12 miles north to Terrell. The city had 6,797 residents in the 2020 census, and Wikipedia lists a 2025 estimate of 10,717.
From Kings Fort to Kaufman
Dr. William P. King founded the settlement as Kings Fort in 1840 after buying about 2.5 square miles of land. It became Kingsboro a few years later, and in 1852 it was renamed Kaufman after the new county, which honored David S. Kaufman. Downtown still has older commercial buildings such as the Maples Block. That long history means a mix of housing ages, from older homes near the square to new houses on the edges of town.
What we see on older Kaufman properties
Older driveways and walks near the center of town have usually been through decades of clay movement. The soil here is Blackland Prairie clay that swells after rain and shrinks and cracks in dry spells. Signs that the base has failed include:
- Panels that rock or sound hollow
- Cracks that have offset so one side sits higher
- Water that runs under the slab instead of off it
- Steps that have pulled away from the porch
We repair what can be repaired and replace what has failed, and we tell you which is which.
What we see on newer properties
New homes on the edges of town come with basic concrete. Owners call for patio extensions, wider driveways, parking pads, stamped walks and pool decks. On these jobs, the key is tying into the builder's slab correctly, with dowels where it is sound and an isolation joint where it is not, and building a compacted base beneath the new work.
Rural lots around town
About 10 percent of Kaufman's residents lived in rural areas in 2020, and many properties around town have acreage. For those, we pour long driveways, shop and barn slabs, and equipment pads. We size thickness and steel for the heaviest load that will use the slab, place a vapor barrier under enclosed buildings and plan truck access ahead of time.

Downtown and the square
The blocks around downtown Kaufman hold some of the oldest homes in the area. Front walks there are often narrow, sunken or broken by tree roots, and driveways may be single-width strips. We can rebuild a walk to the porch, widen a drive, or replace failed sections while keeping the simple look that suits an older house.
Repair or replace
Not every cracked slab needs to go. When most panels are level and the cracks are tight, sealing the cracks and joints keeps water out and buys years of use. When panels have dropped, tilted or started to rock, the base has usually failed and replacing those sections is the lasting fix. We show you what we see and let you decide.
The Kaufman County seat
Kaufman is the seat of Kaufman County, and the Maples Block and other older buildings still stand downtown. Houses within a few blocks of the square tend to be the oldest in town, and their walks and drives have usually been through the most seasons of clay movement. Kaufman has a humid subtropical climate, so we pour early in summer and plan around spring storms. Before scheduling, we check whether the City of Kaufman or the county requires a permit.

Yes. We size the slab and reinforcement for the building and equipment, add a vapor barrier under enclosed space and plan truck access before the pour.
