Concrete Around the Pool

Pool decks in Mesquite take more punishment than any other concrete in the yard. They sit in full sun, get splashed with chlorinated water all summer, and carry bare feet, lounge chairs and wet kids. Our pool deck work covers new concrete decks around in-ground pools, full replacement of cracked or sunken decks, and resurfacing of decks that are sound but worn. The goal is the same each time: a deck that drains, grips and stays comfortable to walk on.

Heat is the first problem

The National Weather Service puts the Dallas-Fort Worth area's average first 100-degree day around July 1 and the last around August 27. Plain concrete gets hot in that sun, and dark or glossy-sealed surfaces get hotter. We steer pool decks toward light colors and textured finishes. HomeGuide's resurfacing guide notes that cool-deck coatings are non-slip and help lower surface temperature. Spray-texture and knockdown finishes also add grip and cut glare.

Water is the second

A pool deck has to shed splash water, rain and backwash away from the pool and away from the house. Water that sits on the deck turns slick and grows algae. Water that runs under the deck soaks the clay, and the Dallas County Master Gardeners point out that the area's black clay swells when it is wet and shrinks when it dries. That cycle is what makes decks sink and separate from the pool coping. We slope decks to the yard or to deck drains, and we seal the joint between the deck and the coping with a flexible sealant so water does not get under it.

Signs a deck needs work

  • Cracks across the deck or a gap opening between the deck and the coping
  • Sections that have sunk and hold water
  • A surface too hot to walk on or slick when wet
  • Flaking or peeling coatings
  • Trip edges at joints or around drains

Replace or resurface?

If the deck is level and the cracks are narrow, a new textured surface over cleaned and repaired concrete is much cheaper than starting over. If sections have dropped, the deck has pulled away from the pool, or water is getting underneath, the concrete itself needs to come out. HomeGuide notes that replacing an existing deck costs about $5 more per square foot than a new one because of removal. We will tell you which one your deck needs.

What goes into a new deck

We excavate, compact a stone base, set forms with slope away from the water, place steel, and pour. Expansion material goes against the pool beam so the deck and pool can move separately. Control joints are cut so cracks stay in line, and the surface gets a grip texture. Deck drains, if needed, are set before the pour. When pool builders pour the shell, we can follow with the deck.

Care

Rinse the deck regularly, keep pool chemicals off it, and reseal or recoat every few years. Keep the coping joint sealed. Remove standing water and keep sprinkler spray off the deck edges.

How It Works

1. Inspect the deck

We check cracks, settling, the coping joint and where water goes.

2. Remove or prepare

Bad concrete is removed and the base rebuilt, or sound concrete is cleaned and repaired for resurfacing.

3. Pour or resurface

New concrete is poured with slope, steel and joints, or a textured surface is applied.

4. Seal and finish

Joints are sealed, the surface is sealed, and we tell you when the deck can be used.

Pool Decks Questions

What does a concrete pool deck cost?

HomeGuide lists new poured concrete pool decks at about $5 to $15 per square foot and stamped decks at $8 to $19. Resurfacing a sound deck runs $3 to $12 per square foot depending on the finish.

Which finish stays coolest?

Light colors and textured coatings stay cooler than dark or smooth surfaces. HomeGuide notes that cool-deck coatings help lower surface temperature and are non-slip.

Why is my deck pulling away from the pool?

Usually the soil under the deck has moved. Clay that gets wet swells and lifts, and when it dries it shrinks and leaves the slab unsupported. Water getting in at the coping joint makes it worse.

Can you resurface instead of replace?

Yes, if the deck is level and the cracks are small. Sunken or broken sections need to come out first.

Do I have to drain the pool?

Not for deck work. We protect the pool from dust and debris during the job.
