Concrete for a Two-County Suburb

Sachse straddles the line between Dallas and Collin counties, just north of Firewheel Town Center, and as concrete contractors we find it a city of mostly newer homes with a growing list of outdoor projects. The population was 9,751 in 2000, 20,329 in 2010 and 27,103 in 2020. Wikipedia lists a 2023 estimate of 32,294. That is a lot of new driveways and back slabs poured in a short time.

Where the name came from

William Sachse, an immigrant from Prussia, founded the settlement in 1845. He bought 640 acres and built the county's first cotton mills and gins. In 1886 he gave the railroad 100 feet of frontage, and the railroad built a depot and named the stop after him. The sign first read "Saxie" by mistake, which was fixed in 1892. The city incorporated in 1956 and adopted a home rule charter in 1986. Today SH 78 and the President George Bush Turnpike carry most traffic in and out.

Young concrete still moves

Because so much of Sachse was built after 2000, people are sometimes surprised when a ten- or fifteen-year-old driveway shows cracks. The reason is underneath. The area sits on Blackland Prairie clay, which swells after rain and shrinks and cracks in dry weather. On top of that, new subdivisions are graded with fill, and fill that was not fully compacted can keep settling for years. A few hairline cracks are normal. Cracks that widen, step up or let a panel tip are a sign of base trouble.

Common requests in Sachse

1. Patio extensions. Builder patios are small. We extend them with dowels into sound concrete, or pour a separate slab with an isolation joint. 2. Stamped concrete. Colored, patterned patios and front walks, sealed after curing. 3. Driveway repair and widening. Replacing sunken panels, or adding width for another vehicle. 4. Pool decks. Textured, slip-resistant decks with expansion joints at the coping. 5. Concrete slabs. Shed pads and small workshop floors on a compacted base. 6. Concrete repair. Crack sealing, edge repair and joint resealing to keep water out.

Two counties, one approach

Sachse lies in both Dallas and Collin counties. The concrete work itself does not change from one side to the other, but it is worth confirming your address when we look up rules for a driveway approach or a slab near a property line. We check whether the City of Sachse requires a permit for your job and whether your HOA needs to sign off before we schedule anything.

How we build a slab that lasts

  • Dig out soft soil and compact a firm base
  • Set rebar on chairs so it sits in the middle of the slab
  • Slope the surface at least slightly away from the house
  • Cut control joints at a spacing that suits the slab thickness
  • Cure the concrete properly, which matters most in summer heat

None of this is exotic. It is simply the work that gets skipped when a job is rushed, and it is the difference between a patio that stays flat and one that tilts toward the back door in a few years.

Near Firewheel and the Turnpike

Sachse sits about a mile north of Firewheel Town Center, with SH 78 and the President George Bush Turnpike carrying most traffic. A driveway that is out of service for a week is a real inconvenience. When we replace a driveway in Sachse, we can pour it in two halves so one side stays usable, or plan the pour around a weekend so the slab gains strength while cars are parked on the street.

Sachse Questions

My Sachse home is only about 15 years old. Why is the driveway cracking?

Clay soil movement and settling fill are the usual causes. Hairline cracks are normal. If panels are tipping or cracks are widening, the base under them likely needs attention.

Can you extend my patio without tearing out the old one?

If the existing slab is level and sound, yes. We drill and set dowels to tie in the new concrete. If the old slab has moved, we either replace it or pour a separate slab with an isolation joint.

Do you handle HOA paperwork?

We give you a written scope and a layout sketch to submit to your HOA, and we wait for approval before we pour.
